FallOut Press Release

Enjoy a giggle and a gasp of glee during FallOut, Co'Motion Dance Theater's concert at the Ames City Auditorium on November 18-19.

FallOut is a "best of" Co'Motion Dance Theater concert, with fun, light dances that have often been requested by regular viewers. Included will be the inspired silliness of How Sweat It Is, an expanded version of Left, Right?, Slapdash, and Don't Think Twice. Several spectacular dances will be collected into a Grand Pas de Deux including Inside the Box, Esolo, BenMan and Adversary.

Taryn Packheiser, newest faculty member at Iowa State Dance will be joining CMDT regulars Ben Rethmeier, Elizabeth Williams and director Valerie Williams in an excerpt from Don't Think Twice. Choreographed by Chris Gauger, Don't Think Twice is an athletic, risk-taking dance made in the spirit of 'going for it'. Chris said that her greatest challenge in dance was to allow her muscles to think, instead of intellectualizing everything. Music by the Penguin Cafe Orchestra drives the dance and dancers.

How Sweat It Is is 20 years old this year and has been a perennial favorite. Choreographer Valerie Williams says that she made the first section of the dance because a friend couldn't get his sweatpants off during a ballet class and that the dance grew from there. She still has a page of ideas that weren't used in the final choreography. "Somehow I got a reputation for making funny dances. I don't know how that happened. I make a dance and people laugh, so I guess I make funny dances." Slapdash and Left, Right? are fast moving, clever dances that require a lot of collaboration from the dancers. Using a stream of consciousness style of choreography, the dancers use words, movement, and song to delight the audience.

The dances collected for Grand Pas are among director Valerie Williams' favorites. "Ben and Elizabeth are very good solo dancers but they also partner really well. They're strong and they give and take in such an intimate manner and do these amazing things with their bodies. They're quite simpatico." Williams put the solos and duets together in the form of a grand pas de deux in ballet.

This is a concert to sit back and enjoy both a giggle and a gasp of awe, and is entirely appropriate for young people. For families with young children, there is a special matinee on Saturday, November 19 at 2pm. The show will be shorter and tailored to a young audience.
