How Social Dances Reflect 20th Century Society
19th Century Dances: Waltz, Polka, Quadrille
Renaissance Dances: Branle, Galliard, Alman, Pavanne, Volta
Medieval Dances: Basse Danse, Carol
Valerie Williams can teach social dances from the 19th and 20th Centuries, Renaissance, and Middle Ages. Based on scholarly research and a lifetime of dancing, Williams reconstructs dances from dancing manuals, video and film, and a myriad of dancing experiences. Tracing dances through the 20th Century makes an interesting history or humanities project and leads to an understanding of how dance reflects socio-economic influences on people during those decades. The early Waltzes and Polkas from the 19th Century are delightful to do, though difficult to learn. They indicate the class differentiation made by the dancing masters. Learn authentic dances from the Renaissance and Middle Ages for your Madrigal Dinner.
